Sensei Paul Parlett started training in 1985 under the instruction of Sensei David Lambert in his dojo which was located in Auburn Street Goulburn, the dojo was situated above the legendary JT’s Gym. He was not the most well behaved student in the class, but whatever hard training Sensei Lambert gave out, he kept coming back, but sometimes against his will, “I have paid, your going” was the response for his mother.
Soon after this the gym and dojo was moved to Bourke Street, into the Masonic Hall, and later to the Knox Street gym and dojo, this is where it remained for several years, then it was moved into Gibson street at the rear of Sensei Lamberts house into a small purpose built dojo that was attached to his house.
In March 2007 the Institute of Traditional Karate moved into the Shape Squash and Fitness Centre due to the large number of students, as the Gibson Street dojo was limited in size, despite its history, it was time for a bigger dojo. The Shape Squash and Fitness Centre has a large dojo floor area of over 100 square metres, with mirrors along one main wall, areas for heavy punching bags, floor to ceiling bag, speedball and kick shields. The dojo also has a full gym, spa, sauna and squash courts available. Why not do a workout in the gym or kick back in the spa or sauna while the kids are being taught karate by a professional.
The dojo is located in the Shape Squash and Fitness Centre at 80 Taralga Road Goulburn. There is plenty of off street parking and the entrance is a safe distance from the street. Inside there is both separate male and female toilets and change rooms. Cold drinks, snacks and a range of gym and sporting equipment are available from the centre.
